Home >>> Book Review: What should I do with my life? by Po Bronson

In a book that spans nearly 400 pages, Po Bronson tackles an issue that many feel is pertinent to their life. We spend 30 or 40 years working. For some the world of work is a time of joy and personal achievement. For others is misery on earth. However, for most of us its something in between. You live with the idea that if you could only find the job you were meant to do, things would be different. Many, many people are waiting for that magic moment to occur.

Knowing you don’t like your career is something many of us face at some point in our life. For some an alternative career choice is obvious. However, many people do not know what they want to do with their life. As Bronson's 55 brief case studies show, for a great many people the route to finding the ‘right’ career path is neither direct nor easy. The book delves into the background of each person featured, and tries to understand the circumstances of each individuals dilemma. Through these case studies of people who have gone some way to reaching the place they wanted to be, we get a glimpse of how they did it - and how we might too. What is most surprising is that there was no moment of enlightenment, when the ‘seeker’ finally found their ‘place‘. Instead, “….most people had a slim notion or a slight urge that they slowly nurtured…until it grew into a vision.”

This is a great book that is both very enlightening and very readable. If your looking for the answer to the question, "What should I do with my life?", this book can help. The strength of this book is the honest portrayal of everyday people facing one of life’s eternal challenges. Perhaps in the future there should be a sequel where we revisit the individuals from each case study to see if their life choices were right….but that’s a topic for another book.

This book deserves a score of 5 (Get It Now!) out of 5 for tackling a difficult topic in an entertaining way.
