Kleeneze, Avon and Betterware are possibly the best known network marketing companies, but there are many, many more. You will be selling door to door, to family and friends and/ or through ‘party planning’. Visit the Direct Services Association (DSA) website (www.dsa.org.uk) for a list of member companies. In the past some people have used dubious practices and promises to encourage people to join their network marketing company. If claims sound too good to be true, they possibly are.

A number of dedicated individuals involved in network marketing make remarkable incomes, but most probably don't. It is also true that not all companies are the same and you are advised to pick the products you feel you could sell, rather than look at the money you might make. If you are successful you may be involved with the products you are selling, for a long time to come.

Usually, you will work with an ’upliner’, (the person who ’introduces’ you to the business and they will often act as a sort of mentor). When you join you become part of their team, they teach you the business and take a share of the commission on your sales. However, part of the business involves creating a team yourself - a ‘downline’. You earn commission from their sales, you act as a mentor to your downline and an important part of the business is recruiting and building the team. This is probably where the big money is to be made. Now, this is not an easy way of making money, although some enthusiastic network marketers may suggest differently. Hard work, prospecting for new clients and building your network are the key elements of this sort of business. You may be better off starting part time to begin with as in many cases this is a slow starting business where the biggest returns come once you are estabished......
