Home >>> How to become a Punch and Judy Professor
In the age of the computer game the need for a ‘real life’ childrens’ entertainer has never been greater! The Punch and Judy story has meaning for kids of all ages and if you are a performer at heart this is just the business for you.
Punch and Judy shows are big business, but don’t expect to be going to the seaside. You are likely to be working at childrens parties, in supermarkets, shopping centres and even family gatherings where the children need to be entertained while the adults enjoy themselves. Please note that you are entering a ‘profession’, and there are certain ways of following this very old tradition. Visit the fantastic resource at www.punchandjudy.com where you will find the trade secrets to get you started. Start up costs are minimal, but you will need to construct a basic ’booth’ from material placed over a wooden or tubular framework. You will also need a set of puppets. (Ebay.co.uk also has puppets for sale every so often). Also, you will need to learn how to make the swazzle (so that you can make Mr Punch’s distinctive voice) and make the ‘slapstick’. But don’t worry, the Punch and Judy website (above) tells you what you need to do, provides scripts and has links to where you can buy puppets. If you can, start off by visiting a Punch and Judy show. Watch the audience - see how children’s entertainment can be big business! Next get a set of puppets (or make your own) and get practicing. Scripts are available from the websites listed below. Start by making a basic ‘booth’. P&J appeals most to children ages 5+ - are there any in your family? If so they can be your first audience - if not its off to the seaside/ fete/ jumble sale or wherever you can offer your services for free. (Check council regulations if setting up at the seaside, though.) When you feel confident start advertising your services in the Yellow Pages, supermarkets, notice boards etc. Price your services competitively with other children’s entertainers, taking into account distance travelled and duration of the show. Fees from £100 or £150 would not be unreasonable depending on what your act involves, but do some research first. Boost your income by providing other entertainment, such as additional stories or balloon modelling. At children’s parties, you could offer a going home ’lucky bag’ consisting of toys and sweets (and your business card!). (Do a bit of homework on what you can buy at wholesale prices and include your own profit margin.) |
